The main tributary of the Guadalquivir river, the Genil, 
became in Iznájar the largest reservoir in Andalusia. 
It occupies land in the provinces of Córdoba, Málaga and Granada,
 its capacity exceeds 950 million cubic meters,
 it has more than 100 kilometers of shoreline and 32 kilometers in length, 
crossing in parallelthe central part of the municipality.

It was inaugurated on June 3, 
1969 and belongs to the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation.
 It serves as defense against the floods of the Genil for Puente Genil, 
Écija and other riverside towns and supplies water for domestic use to 
a population of around 200,000 people.
